MUSIKTHEATER – MACHT – GESELLSCHAFT

An Event Series by the Professorship of Music Theatre

This new event series discusses possible functions of music theatre in our society with the help of academics and artists. Both historic and contemporary phenomena, works, and productions will be addressed. Some of the questions under discussion are: What power does music theatre hold over our society? Does music theatre create society? How does music theatre deal with political and societal subjects? And which influence do politics and society exert on production conditions of music theatre and its historiography?

With these discussions, maybe some light can be shed on the different relationships between music theatre, power, and society (Musiktheater, Macht, Gesellschaft) and how music theatre might take part in the creation of societies (Musiktheater macht Gesellschaft).

12.05.2022, 6.30 pm (CET): Panel Discussion with Jessica Nupen: Dance|Rap|Opera 'The Nose'

To open the event series "MUSIKTHEATER - MACHT - GESELLSCHAFT", the South African choreographer and stage director Jessica Nupen will be invited to Bern. The event series was conceptualized by the professorship of music theatre at the University of Bern and will take place in collaboration with the PROGR Foundation.
In a panel discussion, Jessica Nupen will present her Dance|Rap|Opera 'The Nose' (2021). Based on a short story by Nikolai Gogol, the current political and societal situation in South Africa is addressed. The questions under discussion are: Which position can opera take up in South African society? What influence can artistic production exert globally on postcolonial discourses?
Additionally, the fascinating process of transformation of media in the production, which was developed during the pandemic and evolved from a live production to a film and then a hybrid installation, will be analyzed on the basis of substantial archival film footage. We will discuss how this process of transformation influences the aesthetic and the genre.
